Background of the Study
The motivation of healthcare professionals is crucial to the effective functioning of any healthcare system. Motivated workers exhibit higher levels of commitment, productivity, and job satisfaction, which ultimately leads to better patient care. Among the various factors influencing motivation, salary structure plays a fundamental role. Competitive salaries not only attract skilled professionals but also help in retaining them within the healthcare sector.
In Nigeria, disparities in salary structures, irregular payment of wages, and lack of financial incentives have contributed to a decline in motivation among healthcare professionals. Niger State is no exception, as many healthcare workers express dissatisfaction with their earnings, citing issues such as salary delays, low pay compared to their counterparts in other states, and inadequate allowances. These challenges often lead to low morale, high turnover rates, and migration to better-paying private or foreign institutions.
This study seeks to assess the effect of salary structures on the motivation of healthcare professionals in Niger State, identifying areas for improvement to enhance workforce performance and retention.
